Introduction
In C.D.T we get to decide what we make.
I have chosen to design a jewellery tree because I have always wondered how they are made and i would also like to learn
some new skills. Made out of metal.
I would like it to look something like thiscdt_jewellery_stand.jpg:

Questions

Is there a special type of paint that can paint metal or can you not ??

But Why?

I would like to design a jewellery tree because i would like to learn how to use more skills in the workshop.
I would also like somewhere to put my jewellery.

Yes, you can paint metal. We have a good few spray paints that will do the job.
I like that you have found a picture to give you an idea. You'll be able to braze some steel rods together however it would be too tricky to shape the tree as shown in the picture. We could do something simpler. I would like you to do some research this week. You'll have to find out about:
  • Brazing
  • Materials (steel)
  • Shaping metal
  • More pictures to give you some more ideas
  • Come up with a range of ideas - start sketching them.

  • Brazing is a process which joins two metals together. One piece of metal is heated using a blow torch to slightly above its melting temperature.
If the metal is to hot if will start to smoke. When the metal is hot put the two pieces of metal together.
When they cool they solidify.
  • Shaping metal is when the metal is heated and then moulded into the desired shape. There are other methods that can be used e.g hitting the
metal with a hammer then filing it to make it smoother.

It would be difficult to make the base out of metal. I would recommend some kind of wood to provide a stable base for your design
Can you come up with some alternate ideas for your design?
You should also start planning out the materials you need.

24th February

Today in CDT I began my jewellery tree project by drilling holes in a block of wood then placing a metal circle over the holes and securing it to the wood.

This means that I can use the machine I need to use to smooth and curve the edges which is called a lathe. Before I start using the machine I need to make sure that the

positioning and angles are correct. I also needed to make sure I had the correct stance. Ms Smyth showed us this in lunch time so next lesson I will use the Lathe to smooth and

curve my block of wood.

3rd March

Today in CDT I began to use the Lathe. It was scary at first but after I got used to it, it wasnt so bad. Using the Lathe required a steady hand and good eyesight. Ms Smyth is going to show Lilllie and I how to cut the wood either Monday or Tuesday lunchtime.

10th March

Today I learnt how to shape things on the lathe which wasn't really different from the usual way, only the postitoning was different. I put the tool rest at an angle and after a block of hard work and concentration I had almost finished rounding the edges. I still have a bit of work to do on the lathe so i will finish the rest of that next week and if i have time i will probably sand it down.

24th March

In CDT this week, I finished shaping the base and then I began to sand and smooth it using the lathe. To sand using the lathe you do not require a toolrest, all you need is some sand paper. I have almost finished sanding the base so i will probably finish that next week. I now feel more confident in using the lathe !

31st March

This lesson in CDT we paired up with someone who was doing a different project to us, I went with Sarene, and recored a video where we answered questions e.g What could be done to improve your design and what would make it work better etc. After we made our video we got on with our projects. I have almost finished sanding I just have a few hard lines to get rid of and then I can use the special glossy paint ( does it have a special name ?) to make it look shiney.

28th April

Today in CDT I cut wires for my jewellery tree. I found this quite difficult because the wire was really hard and heavy. After I had cut about 5 or 6 pieces I straightened them out using the vice. I also helped Olivia curve her metal. Next week I think Olivia is going to show me how to curve the metal. :)

5th May

This week in CDT I shaped my metal rods in to a spiral shape by using a mallet and a larger solid metal rod. I have to work faster the next few weeks because we only have three left and i have alot to do also I accidently forgot to go up on Monday lunchtime :/ but I remembered on Tuesday but you were talking to a group of people so I decided not to interupt so me and Lily went up today but you werent there. :/ Sorry xx
